Spray Drying of S-Adenosyl-L-Methionin 1,4-Butandisulphonate

S-Adenosyl-L-Methionin 1,4-Butandisulphonate (SAMe) is a naturally occurring molecule in the body with important biological functions. SAMe is known to have therapeutic effects on various conditions including depression, liver disease, and osteoarthritis. However, SAMe is unstable in the presence of moisture and heat, which limits its application in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. Spray drying is a promising method for stabilizing SAMe, and several studies have investigated the spray drying of SAMe with different excipients such as maltodextrin, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin, and chitosan. The results indicate that spray drying can successfully produce SAMe powders with improved stability and bioavailability. The choice of excipient and spray drying conditions can significantly affect the physicochemical properties of the powder, such as particle size, morphology, and solubility. Therefore, careful optimization of the spray drying process is required to obtain SAMe powders with desired properties for various applications.
