Salmon calcitonin is a hormone that is used to treat osteoporosis and related bone disorders. It is a relatively unstable molecule that is rapidly degraded in the gastrointestinal tract when taken orally. Therefore, alternative routes of administration, such as inhalation or injection, have been investigated. Spray drying is one method that has been used to produce dry powder formulations of salmon calcitonin for inhalation. The process involves atomizing a liquid solution of the drug and excipients into a heated chamber, where the solvent evaporates and leaves behind a dry powder. The resulting powder can be easily dispersed and inhaled through a dry powder inhaler. Studies have shown that spray-dried salmon calcitonin retains its biological activity and has good stability when stored under appropriate conditions. Therefore, spray drying may be a promising method for the production of dry powder formulations of salmon calcitonin for inhalation.
