Spray Drying of Desferal

Spray Drying of Desferal with the Mini Spray Dryer B-290

Spray Drying of Desferal

Desferal, also known as deferoxamine mesylate, is a medication used to treat iron overload in the body, such as in patients with thalassemia or sickle cell disease. Spray drying is a technique that can be used to convert the liquid form of desferal into a dry powder, which can have advantages for storage, transportation, and dosing.

The areas of focus in spray drying of desferal include optimizing the process parameters, such as inlet temperature, outlet temperature, atomizer type, feed rate, and solvent composition, to achieve the desired particle size, morphology, and yield. Additionally, research has been conducted to evaluate the impact of different processing aids and excipients on the physical and chemical stability of the desferal powder, as well as its solubility and bioavailability.

Spray drying has also been explored as a potential method for improving the pulmonary delivery of desferal, as it can produce inhalable powders with controlled release properties. Other areas of interest include the development of novel formulations and delivery systems for desferal powder, such as nanoparticles, liposomes, or microparticles, which can improve its pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties.
